JOB SUMMARY: Oversees the day-to-day operations of the hospital based lab with emphasis on scheduling of staff, ordering of supplies, staff interactions and representing the lab as needed at assigned committee meetings. Serves as the General Supervisor of the Hospital Laboratory. Provides excellent customer service on the phone and in person to all laboratory customers. Works well under pressure. Demonstrates competency in performing all testing in Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Microbiology, POCT, and Blood Bank. Must be able to troubleshoot analyzers and equipment, prioritize specimens (STAT, Timed, Routine, Pre-op, etc.), wisely use time, multitask, and be flexible in order to fill staffing needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Medical Laboratory Technologist Supervisor
Accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic support.
Provides day-to-day supervision of personnel performing high complexity testing Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by certain individuals
Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained
Fulfills certain responsibilities if delegated by the lab director or technical supervisor, such as: -
Resolving technical problems and ensuring remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
Ensuring patient test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly
Providing orientation to all testing personnel
Annually evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel
Schedule personnel, assist the Lab Manager in employee evaluations, coaching and the progressive disciplinary process. Also assists in the interviewing and hiring of new staff.
Oversees the quality control programs from all in-house clinical testing as well as the lab. These include but are not limited to:
Reportable infectious diseases
Collects, and directs the collection of specimens, with rigid attention to proper patient identification, labeling, priority status, hospital and laboratory safety, and infection control policies for clinical testing.
Assure that the personnel scheduled to work in the hospital based lab meet staffing and budgetary needs.
Represent the Laboratory in process improvement committee’s within the hospitals as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
Follows hospital policies and procedures for transporting and delivering samples to laboratory.
Knowledge of handling laboratory supplies, orders and stocks supplies.
Organize requisitions received for collection. Maintain records of tests performed. Scan order and lab results into electronic medical system, print and fax lab reports to ordering doctor, as needed.
Follows standards precautions using personal protective equipment as required. Knowledge and performance of sterile technique.
Perform laboratory testing that aids in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
Perform Operation, Quality Control, Maintenance, and calibration of automated analyzers, and Point of Care instruments. Perform Quality Control on products, reagents, controls and refrigerators.
Perform proficiency testing.
Keep lab procedures up to date and current methodology for tests performed.
Process samples to ensure good turn-around-time and prioritize specimens (STAT, Timed, Routine, Pre-op, etc.).
Troubleshoot analyzers and equipment.
Ensure that patients receive appropriate, competent, and quality clinical care and that customer service exceeds patient’s expectation.
Adherence by staff to all policy and procedures.
Provides age appropriate care.
Reporting, monitoring, and management of patient and staff incidents.
Monitoring and management of patient and physician satisfaction results.
Maintain, develop and utilize professional relationships with a wide range of organizations and specialists. Maintain effective working relationships with nursing, clerical, medical and allied health staff.
Performs miscellaneous tasks that promote smooth operations.
Education/Certification: Minimum - Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science. Must have current MLS Certification or equivalent or be eligible for certification. Current valid driver’s license.
Experience: Minimum 5 years high complexity laboratory testing experience. Minimum 2 years Supervisory experience preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Equipment/Technology: Experience with computers and office equipment required. Cerner Millennium and Softbank experience preferred
Language/Communication: The ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English required. Bilingual is an asset. Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely.
