The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for an Medical Instrument Technician(Polysomnography). The Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) will function in Medicine Service. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Registration is offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).Grade Determinations, GS-8 Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) candidate must have the following: Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs: Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians. Preferred Experience: Ability to mentor lower graded technicians. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08. Physical Requirements: Regular and reoccurring work is mostly sedimentary involving sitting at a desk, although the position requires the ability to move from one geographic location of the facility to another. Some physical effort such as standing, walking, bending, prolonged sitting, and carrying light objects under 50 pounds may be required. The work place has no special demands. Maintain on-going documentation of care/treatment provided in the Sleep Disorder Program. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies Score in-patient and outpatient sleep studies as directed by the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorder Program. Coordinate CPAP and BiPAP set ups according to protocol after the sleep study Maintain a safe environment for patients and other healthcare workers Assist with diagnostic and /or therapeutic modalities within the scope of sleep medicine when applicable.
