This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, NV. The work is a combination of phlebotomy duties and moderate complexity testing under the supervision of a supervisor or medical technologist in the outpatient, inpatient, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) locations. To qualify for this position, you must meet the following criteria: ENGLISH LANGUAGE Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Medical Technician GS-5. Specialized experience is (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings and/or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a phlebotomist. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the Medical Technician position which may include clinical hematology, clinical laboratory practices, phlebotomy practicum, clinical microbiology, clinical practicum, or special topics in the Medical Laboratory Technology field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.
